Four Young Journalists' have been selected

The four finalists of the Young Journalists' Programme  within the framework of the first Innovation Competition on Decentralized Energy Solutions in Ethiopia have been selected. The young journalists have the possibility to report about the Innovation Competition and receive attractive support packages.

10 finalists identified for the Innovation Competition

On 31 March 2021, the Ethiopian-German Energy Cooperation held a kick-off for the ‘Innovation Competition for Decentralised Energy Solutions Ethiopia’ finalists. The competition’s call for proposals attracted a diverse pool of applicants from across Ethiopia, with 47 submissions. Following a robust evaluation process, jury members from Ethiopia and Germany selected 10 finalists whose innovations stood out in terms of economic viability, gender, climate change as well as social and environmental impact.

Participation of Minister Dr. Selechi Bekele Awulachew at the BETD2021

Dr. Selechi Bekele Awulachew, Ethiopian Minister of Water, Irrigation and Energy participated at the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue 2021. On 17 March 2021 he was welcomed as a speaker on the panel "Global goals, local actions" alongside Dorah Marema, Portfolio Head-Municipal Sustainability, South African Local Government Association (SALGA), Dr Megan Woods, Minister of Energy and Resoruces, New Zealand, Teresa Ribera Rodríguez, Spanish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, and Angus Taylor, Australian Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction.

The official Ethiopian-German Energy Cooperation and Innovation Competition

On 1 September 2020, the Ethiopian-German Energy Cooperation celebrated its high-level inauguration event-in a virtual format. This marked the official launch of the cooperation and the innovation competition on decentralised energy solutions for Ethiopia.

Establishment of the Cooperation

On Nov 19, 2019, the Ethiopian Minister of Water, Irrigation and Energy, H.E. Dr. Seleshi Bekele, and the German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, H.E. Peter Altmaier, signed a declaration of intent between the two governments. This marked the establishment of the project-based energy cooperation.

Ministry of Water, Irrigation, and Energy (MoWIE) is organised the first Ethiopia Water and Energy Week (EWEW) from June 17-20, 2019 in Addis Ababa with the theme of “Transformation of Water and Energy sector for Ethiopia's New Horizon of Hope”.
